The aim of this workshop is to introduce the public to an important molecular technique, which is the first step in discovering the microbial diversity in water: "DNA extraction." The workshop will begin with a brief introduction to the cell, including observing some cells under a microscope, and discussing the importance of genetic material. We will explain the routine DNA extraction process used in the Microbial Ecology Unit and its applications in research. Participants will then extract DNA using a simple protocol with reagents commonly found at home. We will conclude the workshop with a sweet treat. Activity carried out in collaboration with the Grant PTA2022-022494-I funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by ESF Investing in your future.
