We celebrate Soil Day with Remedios Alarcón, a researcher in agroecology at the Instituto Madrileño de Investigación y Desarrollo Rural, Agrario y Alimentario (IMIDRA). Remedios has a solid career in the study of plant biodiversity and the sustainability of agricultural systems, and her current research focuses on evaluating the impact of agronomic practices on rainfed arable crops and designing strategies for the transition to diversified and resilient cereal systems.

Her visit to IES Alonso Quijano (Alcalá de Henares), an educational centre that has had its own ecological project (Greequijano) running for more than five years, is oriented towards reinforcing in students the need for agronomic research that focuses on sustainability over uncontrolled productivity.
