(Part 1) The activity aims to introduce students from the second year of Sixth Form to scientific research through an activity where they can learn how exercises for gaining strength or stretching muscles can be suitable or unsuitable for their intended purpose, depending on their correct or incorrect execution. Students will learn to identify and correct common mistakes in the execution of specific exercises for muscle groups such as abdominals, glutes, and quadriceps. Additionally, they will be taught the importance of proper dosage in their exercise routines to optimise benefits in terms of strength, flexibility, and injury prevention.
(Part 2) The activity aims to introduce students from the second year of Sixth Form to scientific research through an experiment where they will learn how muscle activity is recorded and analysed during activities and movements using surface electromyography (EMG). Participants will observe how electrodes are placed on the skin to capture the electrical signals from muscles during exercises such as squats, planks, and throws.
They will experience firsthand how these signals are recorded in real time and how they are interpreted to better understand muscle function and coordination. Students will also discover individual differences in muscle activation and how EMG can be used to identify specific movement patterns.
Through this activity, we will explore the applications of EMG in fields such as physiotherapy and sports, highlighting its importance in improving muscle function and injury recovery.
