In recent years, several research groups have focused their efforts on exploring new therapeutic strategies based on cell therapy. Additionally, material engineering has evolved in the design and synthesis of bioactive biomaterials. The term biomaterial refers to biological or synthetic materials used in manufacturing devices that interact with biological systems. The use of biomaterials and stem cells has shown great therapeutic potential, piquing the interest of the scientific community and fostering the proposal of new targets in complex pathologies and central nervous system (CNS) injuries. Stem cell utilization has led to the discovery and description of mechanisms behind the beneficial activities of cell therapy in human diseases through experimental approaches to improve patient health, autologous and allogeneic cell transplantation of different cell types, embryonic cells, adult stem cells, or induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).
In this presentation, we will discuss the research conducted in our laboratory in this field, focusing on the models used, innovative biomaterials, and cells employed in various pathologies. We will showcase two examples of preclinical trials; furthermore, we will examine stem cells under the microscope and analyze their biocompatibility with different biomaterials and substances
