In this activity, pesticides will be extracted from contaminated soils and groundwater using detergents in the laboratories of the INPROQUIMA Group at the Faculty of Chemistry of the UCM. A demonstration will be made with real soils contaminated by residues from manufacturing obsolete and highly toxic pesticides. These pollutants will be extracted using biodegradable, low-toxicity surfactants (soaps), cleaning the soils and reducing their danger to the surrounding environment. This technology is being used in the European LIFE SURFING project to clean the subsoil of a landfill in Sabiñánigo (Huesca), which is highly contaminated by residues from the manufacture of Lindane, which pose a significant risk to the nearby river Gállego.
