The activity is organized into two parts. In one part, we will learn about the carbon cycle and the main reservoirs in the ecosystem (wood, roots, soil, litter), culminating in a contest where the winner will be the one who comes closest to the results of real research.
In the other part of the activity, we will discover soil as the living ecosystem it is: its components, the macro and microorganisms that inhabit it, and how it breathes. Participants will prepare soil samples for measurement and subject them to treatments, simulating the negative effects humans have on soils (compaction, toxic spills, etc.). We will measure the respiration in each treatment and discuss the results.
