About me

Carmen Palomo Pinel is Associate Professor of Roman Law and Oral and Written Legal Expression. She is currently part of the project “Definitio: The concept of definition in Law through classical philosophical and legal thought”, financed by the BBVA Foundation within the “Logos” program to promote Classical Studies.
One of her main lines of research is the patristic sources for the knowledge of Roman law, paying special attention to how the thought structures of the classical jurists are assimilated by the first Christian writers and applied to new contexts. An example directly related to this project is her study of the definition of paterfamilias in Roman law, used in the theological field by Lactantius, an investigation that was published as a monograph under the title “Nec inmerito paterfamilias dicitur. The paterfamilias in the thought of Lactantius. Another of her lines of research is legal reasoning and language in Roman jurists, in which the Definitio project is included. In addition to this academic work, she has published several books of poetry, for which she has received various awards. In her love for the written word these two vocations come together and it also makes sense to participate in initiatives as exciting as the European Night of Researchers with a workshop like this one, dedicated to publicizing the work of goldsmithing that Roman jurists did with the expression litus maris.
