The Doppelgänger, a threatening double with a death drive, is a constant in popular culture and art history. The thesis presents the Doppelgänger as an artistic typology with its own entity in contemporary times. Through the study of authors and works, certain core elements are identified: the search for the uncanny, a pictorialist tendency, fragmented narration, staging, the multiplication of the subject, and complex underlying psychological factors.
