The Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM) joins the activities of the European Night of Researchers in Madrid with a conference-workshop at the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (Pº del Gral. Martínez Campos, 14, 28010 Madrid ). The SEBBM participates in the European Night of Researchers and Researchers 2022, an initiative that is carried out simultaneously in 340 cities throughout Europe, and which in the Community of Madrid is coordinated by the Foundation for Knowledge madri+d, with the common goal of bringing scientific research closer to citizens. We will start the activity with a brief talk given by Dr. Rafael Zardoya, Director of the National Museum of Natural Sciences. Dr. Zardoya studies patterns, processes and mechanisms associated with the generation of biodiversity, a central issue in Evolutionary Biology. Subsequently, a series of workshops with simple experiments will be carried out in order to learn first-hand the elements that intervene in the diversity of plants and how they use different pigments to adapt to the environment; from obtaining energy to the relationship with other organisms, through defense against external agents. Attendees will also extract DNA from a fruit to access where the plant's genetic information resides. Dr. Zardoya's conference is for all audiences and will be free to enter until the capacity of the auditorium is full (256 seats). The workshop is designed for ages 12 and up. In order to carry out the workshops, it will be necessary to reserve a place from September 19, until reaching a capacity of 52 attendees, at the following link: https://sebbm.es/agenda-cientifica/conocer-la-biodiversidad-para- keep it/ IMPORTANT: Those registered for the workshop must arrive before 6:30 p.m. to collect tickets and not lose their reservation. MADRIDNIGHT is a scientific dissemination project, coordinated by the madri+d Foundation and funded by the European Union within the Horizon Europe Program, under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions with grant agreement No. 101061343.
