Workshop with an introduction to the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing system, so that the participants can write their names using hieroglyphs, and to the writing materials used by scribes. Tour around a photographic exhibition to show how writing changed according to the purpose, means and time period. Writing was a technological innovation which, among other things, enabled the creation of the Egyptian state in the Nile Valley, promoted the development of the economy and the administration around 3000 BC, and boosted many social and ideological changes. The activity planned includes three scenarios: a) a guided tour through a small photographic exhibition of inscribed artefacts retrieved by the Djehuty Project excavating in Luxor, in which the different types of writing systems used in ancient Egypt will be explained; b) a practical workshop where participants will learn the basics of the hieroglyphic writing system and will copy their names using “alphabetical” signs. c) a practical presentation of how ancient scribes produced their writing tools and implements (reeds, ink, papyrus, lamps) The audience to whom the activity is targeted is families with children over 12 years old and adults.
